So just what is meditation ? like many imported words in the English language, the definition of meditation has suffered at the hands of unenlightened persons. The Macquarie Dictionary defines it simply as “contemplation or to reflect”, but the origins of the word has a much deeper metaphysical meaning. Traditionally, meditation is that special term used to describe ‘concentrated communion with God’. The word concentration in this definition is important, as I reveal in my web page the Stages of Meditation. The ancient Rishi (illumined sage) known as Patajali* places the act of meditation (dhyana) as the seventh step of the eight clear steps in his system of Yoga known as The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (Buy Now) , where by the practice of which, man may reunite ones consciousness with God. Here-in lies the true purpose of the act of meditation and here also is the definition of Yoga (union with God). *Patajali lived in India in second century BC and is credited as the foremost authority on Yoga and author of the Yoga Sutras.
